Rabies Vaccine Found in Anne Arundel County Home

Family pet brings in vaccine that is being dispersed to less populated areas of the county.

Patch contributor had an up close experience with the Oral Rabies Vaccination Project (ORV)  that the Anne Arundel County Department of Health began dispensing in "less populated" areas by county workers on foot and via low flying county helicopters.

Instead of a bag of chips strewn in her living room, Cole recently found the ORV package, and wondered why and how it got there - since raccoons aren't on her entertaining guest list.

Her dogs found the brown block shown in the photo in her fenced yard and brought it into the house.

"...How it got there is a mystery - the county does not put them in fenced areas. It might have hitchhiked in on a lawn mower or perhaps, a raccoon," she wrote.

Cole, of Gingerville Woods, did contact the Health Department, who  took a report of the incident over the phone, while assuring her that there was no harm done to her pets.

"I, personally, think people should know what the actual vaccine looks like, so they know what that brown block is in their yard and to leave it alone," she wrote.

As you'll see by the photo, the dogs did eat part of the fish protein block, but not the vaccine, neither of which is harmful to household pets."

According to the Health Department, the ORV Project should be completed by Friday. In the meantime, keep an eye on what your pets are bringing into your home, especially if you have young children.
