Local Cub Scouts Honored for Service Project

Cub Scouts Pack 688 Den 6 was honored for the work they did with the Severna Park Republican Women's Club's stockings for troops.

A local Cub Scout pack that meets at Shipley’s Choice Elementary School recently received a senatorial citation for its work on a service project.

Cub Scouts Pack 688 Den 6 made holiday greeting cards for soldiers in Afghanistan as part of the Severna Park Republican Women's Club's stocking project.

“The Severna Park Republican Women's Club had a service project where they were filling Christmas stockings for deployed service men and women and one component was Christmas cards,” said Den Leader Bob Berardino “They asked young people to write Christmas cards to troops.”

Den 688, which consists of 9- and 10-year-olds in the Shipley’s Choice area, created the cards as part of their Citizen Activity Badge. The boys were then honored on Dec. 19 when Sen. Ed Reilly (R-Annapolis) presented them with senatorial citations.

Berardino said he thinks his pack of 14 fourth-graders understood who they were making the cards for and why because some of their family members have served.

“I think they got it. We had a lot of parents who were veterans and they explained how meaningful getting the cards was to them,” Berardino said. “And we talked about the difference between just saying Merry Christmas versus putting sentiment behind the cards to thank the troops for their work.”

Berardino also talked about the appropriateness of the project in relation to the Citizen Activity Badge, in which they are supposed to focus on government and personal citizenship.

“We thought it was important to recognize those who are not home with their families and thank them for the sacrifices they are making,” Berardino said. “And since it was related to the citizen badge, what better way to fulfill that commitment than to help those who defend our country.”
