Get Involved: Join Greater Severna Park Rotary Club

The club meets every Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Starbucks in Severna Park.

Did you know that thanks rotary clubs, like the one in Severna Park, polio has almost been wiped from the earth?

According to Rotary.org, polio cases have plummeted by more than 99 percent. When Rotary began its work, polio infected more than 350,000 children annually. In 2009, fewer than 1,700 cases were reported worldwide.

If you want to be involved in an organization that has a national and local impact, consider joining the Greater Severna Park Rotary Club.

I stopped by one of the clubs weekly meetings on Tuesday and got to meet the men who make up the Severna Park chapter and learned a little about all that the club does.

On Tuesday afternoon, they were taking dictionaries to Oak Hill Elementary. As part of their Dictionary Project, the Severna Park Rotary Club gives a dictionary to every third grader in greater Severna Park area schools, public and private.

Three years ago, the club gave a container of books to a village in southern Sudan. The container became a library to the people in the village until another group built an actual library.

These projects are just a small part of the efforts the Greater Severna Park Rotary Club is involved in.

If you are interested in joining the group, you can stop by one of their meetings. They are held every Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Severna Park Starbucks located on Ritchie Highway.
