Zachary's Jewelers

Patch: How long have you been in the jewelry business?

Samaras: Since 1980. I've always been fascinated by how jewelry is made and how gems are mined. I went to gemological school for a few years and then traveled to Africa from 1985-1989 to work with management teams of different diamond mines.

Patch: Why did you choose to set up a business here?

I was born and raised in Annapolis, and while I like to travel, my heart has always been here. I recognize Annapolis as one of the most romantic places in the country. The simple fiber is historic and maritime and really, you can't get more romantic than being by the water. I'm glad I followed my heart and opened my shop here.

Patch: Where is your favorite vacation spot?

Samaras: Locally, I would say Bermuda. My wife and I also love Greece. I'm always around the water! I enjoy travelling and am fortunate enough to have created a staff that allows for it. It's wonderful being comfortable enough to leave the store keys in their hands.

Patch: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

Samaras: Whenever a problem arises, look to yourself first for the cause of that problem before you lash out at anyone else.

Patch: What's the most rewarding part of your job?

Samaras: That we are there for people during their most special moments. He recalls:

"A Naval Academy graduate from years ago approached Errol Daly (Zachary's general manager) because he needed to buy a gift for his wife to celebrate their 10th Anniversary.

The man told Errol that he had been there for every milestone in his life. Errol sold him his academy ring, his engagement ring, his wedding rings, a push gift for when his first child was born and now his 10th anniversary gift."

Samaras: To be that important in such a time is tremendous.
