Is College Education a Right - an Entitlement - or a Privilege?

The topic of The Dream Act is obviously an emotional one for people. Do you think that as a society we owe our children a university education? Is it a requirement of parents? Or a privilege?

I have been taking petitions with me everywhere I go.  I take advantage of every opportunity to collect signatures.  So if you see me and want to sign....feel free to ask.

This subject is without a doubt a hot one.   In the ten pages of signatures I've collected, only two people have refused to sign.  Neither was willing to share with me their reasons.  Maybe they are just very private with their feelings or maybe they were afraid of any discussion.

Interestingly though, I had one businessman at a Chamber of Commerce business mixer tell me his reasons for wanting the petition drive to fail but signed it anyway!  He - in a nutshell - has a heart for kids but felt the issue was too important for the citizens to not be able to have their own say.   I wasn't sure how to respond to that, so I just said  "Thanks for signing."

In my previous blog I stated that giving a benefit to illegal immigrants - such as lower tuition costs at our community colleges & universities - will bring more illegals into our state so they can take advantage of this perc.  Since then I've had conversations with people who now have or previously have had connections with our Anne Arundel County Health Department.

They've told me our county has a reputation as a "Sanctuary County" because of the Health Department's favorable treatment of illegals.  Not to get off on a different subject, but I just want to prove my point about how our whole state will become a Sanctuary State for the illegal populous.   Every person who comes here and isn't paying their fair share puts a strain on all of our facilities;  be it our lower schools, hospitals or universities.

Every hard working person deserves to benefit from the fruit of their labours.  But does this mean we must give special treatment to people just because they are here?
