WATCH: Preakness Hats You Won't Believe

Feathers, bows and sequins, oh my!

Marjae Hicks is busy adorning Baltimore area heads with feathers, jewels, bows, sequins, flowers and all the bling that is associated with a Preakness hat. The Preakness Stakes is one of Baltimore's historical sports events, offering tradition and excitement. And big hats. According to Marjae, owner of Hats by Marjae in Westminster, MD, Preakness-worthy hats are big and whimsical and will get people talking. Locally, the Severna Park Republican Women's Club held a Preakness hat contest at their fashion show and luncheon on Wednesday. "You have to wear your hat with confidence. If you don't, it will show," Marjae said. "You have to have confidence in your hat. Even if it's the most whimsical, crazy-looking hat, it will be beautiful." Black-…

Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. The split will be phased in over the next four years beginning July 1 with the new budget year. That bill also includes a doubling of…

Froyo House Opens on Mother's Day

If you want dessert, there's a new kid on the block or boulevard—B&A that is—in Severna Park.

The Froyo House will open at 11 a.m. Sunday, which is Mother's Day. The owners—Max Petit and his fiance, Ally Dietsch—made final preparations to the store on Friday with the help of family and fellow business owners like Deb Hoffman of the Big Bean. The Froyo House is located at 550 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd., in the former convenience store next to Squisito's Pizza. They will offer 16 flavors of frozen yogurt and 15 toppings. There's a coupon to use on Voice Values. Petit, 25, grew up and now resides in Severna Park. He is also a bartender across the street at Adam's Ribs. He managed a yogurt shop for six years in California, where he learned all aspects of running this type of business. Dietsch, 26, is the full-time manager. She and Petit…

Pretty Papers for Mother's Day

Put Paper in the Park on your list for Mother's Day shopping, especially if your mom likes to entertain.

Entertaining is one thing you think of when entering Paper in the Park and that's what many moms like to do when hostessing at home. So, if you are looking for unique gifts for your mom, or your kids are asking you for a tip on what you would like—check it out. Plus, if you (or the kids and husband) shop on Saturday, they can enter the SHOP LOCAL drawing for prizes while browsing. I caught up with Paper in the Park owners Susie Hill and Kassy Sodergreen and asked for their top choices for Mother's Day gifts. The two agreed that their new line of customized paper placemats and other kitchen accessories make attractive and useful gifts for moms (see pictures). Also, I was introduced to something practical and fun for those who like to dress …
