With the month of April ending, I wanted to share our comments about the book we read for our Five O'Clock Angels Book Club, which was The Expats by Chris Pavone.
The truth be told, I could not get through the beginning chapters of this book. I found out at our book club that most everyone came to the same conclusion and many did not finish the book, including myself.
The main character of the book became unbelievable from the start. It was difficult to become captive with the story mainly because it was a "bit jumpy" as one of our members described. Little time was spent discussing this book, and so we indulged in talking about other happenings in each other's lives, ie weddings, children, anniversaries celebrated, etc. while enjoying great wine and food from our wonderful hostess. Our next book is called Then Came You, by Jennifer Weiner.
In my other book club (hopefully, next month we will name ourselves) we had an entirely different experience with our book selection. Everyone loved Madame Tussaud by Michelle Moran and the discussion was very lively. This book was last month's Five O'Clock Angel's selection (in a prior post) and it was interesting that the opinions were very similar. Then someone came up with an idea to have a meeting at a local restaurant rather than someone's house in the coming months.
Any suggestions of a restaurant would be welcome... Our next book is the Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. This is her first book so it should be fun.
Happy Reading!!

We just had our bookclub on Friday. We read Winter Garden by Kristen Hannah. It was a remarkable book. The book takes place in America with flashbacks to the Seige of Leningrad. It takes you through a personal account of a Mom and her hardships she endured while living in Leningrad. This was one book club that I remember where we actually spent most of our time talking about what this Mom faced and if we would have been strong enough to endure the same experiences. Of course the discussion lead to other events that were somewhat similiar (ie: losing a child). The members all thought this was a wonderful book and well worth the reading. I highly recommend it.
As far as suggestions for a restaurant - I would recommend the Woodfire. You can have a conversation there without having to yell. The Backroom is too noisy and often crowded, depending on the night. Our club meant at Brian Boru's on a Friday night and I heard it went well. I was not able to make it.
Happy Reading and thank you for the recommendations above.

"A Good Cover" has been reading some fantastic choices over the past few months: Defending Jacob (a current best seller), Half Broke Horse (second book for Jeannette Walls of The Glass Castle), Ready Player One (futuristic yet grounded story, and an amazing play list). I love the eclectic mix of writing styles and story lines the group brings. This month is Fifty Shades of Grey which should make for interesting conversation!
