BLOG: Smart Meters: Have You Deferred Installation Yet?

On May 22nd, the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC), the regulatory body over Baltimore Gas & Electric (and other utilities), held a public hearing to determine whether or not customers should be allowed to opt out of having a Smart Meter installed on their home or business.

On May 24th, the PSC issued an interim order allowing customers to "defer" installation of the wireless meters by requesting a deferral in writing to BG&E, while BG&E continues to install on homes and businesses in the Severna Park area.  This information has not been widely publicized and Maryland Smart Meter Awareness wants residents to know they do not have to accept a meter right now.

A form letter for you to use:

Date:

Account No:

Sent Via Certified Mail to Baltimore Gas & Electric, ATTN:  SMART GRID DEFERRAL, P. O. Box 1475, Baltimore, MD  21203

NOTICE OF DEFERRAL OF INSTALLATION OF SMART METERS PER PSC'S ORDER NO. 84926 DATED MAY 24, 2012

I am hereby notifying BG&E and its agents (including but not limited to Grid One Solutions, Inc., the installers) that I request a deferral of installation of a Smart Meter on my home or business and that you are to refrain from installing such meter pursuant to Order No. 84926.

Sign your name and send a copy to David Collins, Executive Secretary, Public Service Commission, William Donald Schaefer Tower, 6 St. Paul Street, 16th Fl, Baltimore, MD 21202-6808.

If you have have a meter installed, the PSC's order provides that you can write a similar letter and state that you do not want the Smart Meter that has already been installed, and as such, BGE is to refrain from activating the transmitter, which results in activating the radiation.

You should also visit MarylandSmartMeterAwareness.org for additional information, bumper stickers, lawn signs, meter signs, etc.  Help spread the word.

Also - beware - BGE has promised to send a postcard a few weeks in advance of your meter replacement (BGE calls it a mere upgrade when it is a replacement of your safe analog meter with an unsafe Smart Meter), however, in many cases, the installer (Grid One Solutions) is just appearing without notice.  If you are not home to defend your analog meter by saying "NO" to the installers, you may come home one day to a new "smart" meter that 10 other states are fighting as well.

Yes filled deferral, and all my neighbors did as well.
There is not a single ratepayer that I talked to , that took the time to listen that did not indicate that to me that they do not want a Smart Meter.

I tell them now that you know tell your Electric utility.

I am certain that the general population will be caught totally unaware, when the Smart meters start transmitting pulsed microwave radiation.

The unfortunate aspect is that Marylanders have had plenty of time and relevant information to have stopped this abomination at the PSC level before it got off the ground.

"Yes filled deferral, and all my neighbors did as well."

Find that hard to believe.

"There is not a single ratepayer that I talked to , that took the time to listen that did not indicate that to me that they do not want a Smart Meter."

This is more plausible. Anyone who "took the time to listen" George is not exactly playing with a full deck.

"pulsed microwave radiation."

Oooh -- that sounds really scary! Are they returning their I-Phones too?

Malaprop - play fair or I'll ask to you have you removed! Post something useful for ratepayers and not childish responses.

It's one thing to be on an iPhone for over 50 mins (the current maximum), but if you are exposed to a Smart Meter, you are exposed 24/7 so the effect is cumulative. You can turn off your cell phone but you cannot turn off your Smart Meter.

Have you removed the misleading statements on your website regarding the Karolinska Institute?

Have you decided how your are going to handle your association with Christine Hoch and CFSW given her appearance on the hate-filled, anti-Semitic radio show?

I have one more question for you -- it actually is your question. You are concerned about the "replacement of your safe analog meter"

Do tell me how you can prove them safe?

It's exactly the same question you asked last month about smart meters:

Please give us your scientific opinion of how something like an analog meter is proven safe. I have to admit, I had a fairly rigorous science education and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to prove something safe.

Readers - An analog meter by its very nature is safe. No 2-way communications which appear to bringing health issues to people in multiple states and have shown to have privacy and safety issues which the very safe analog has never brought to citizens.

Since I am not a scientist, I cannot give MY scientific opinion. Those that are scientists, have given their opinions and that is why we are allowed to defer installations now while the PSC decides on a permanent opt out. So what business do you have evaluating studies and asking for donations if you are not properly trained to vet those studies?

What makes you think the American Academy of Environment Medicine, whose former president was charged by the Texas Medical Board with injecting patients with potentially harmful and/or unproven agents, is an authority?

"We should be practicing the precautionary principle"
Which clearly you do not. Do you understand how to assess risk? Do you have knowledge of basic probability and statistics? Your misapplication of the "Precautionary Principle" would cease all technological development. We could not have cars with exhaust. We could not have home heating oil nor gas. All of these have risk, as do many others.

You do a great disservice by misleading and misinforming Patch readers with nonsensical studies whose flaws you are too ill-trained to recognize.

Yes Risks such such as....
ACID RAIN http://www.epa.gov/acidrain/what/index.html
"In the United States, roughly 2/3 of all SO2 and 1/4 of all NOx come from electric power generation that relies on burning fossil fuels, like coal. Acid rain occurs when these gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds. The result is a mild solution of sulfuric acid and nitric acid. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released from power plants and other sources, prevailing winds blow these compounds across state and national borders, sometimes over hundreds of miles. "

What Japanese leaders can learn from the Fukushima nuclear crisis
"(CNN) -- They finally called a spade a spade.
Japanese Parliament's new Fukushima report which stated that "its fundamental causes are to be found in the ingrained conventions of Japanese culture: our reflexive obedience; our reluctance to question authority; our devotion to sticking with the program" exposes perhaps the weakest aspect of the Japanese governance style.

Japanese companies are known to be indecisive, always taking a long time to reach any conclusion.

I read an article in the sun about MarylandSmartMeterAwareness.com and when I saw a picture of its President Jonathon Libber, I nearly plotzed.

Is Mr. Libber aware that the site of which he is president links to CFSW? And does he know that Christine Hoch -- director of CFSW -- went on an anti-semitic, Holocaust Denier's radio show to discuss smart meters? And what does Mr. Libber think about this?

I am absolutely certain that Mr. Libber, apparently a "Frum Yid," would not tolerate any association with a website whose director appeared on a Holocaust Denier's show -- that would be what we call a "shondeh."

Please let me know if Mr. Libber is aware, or better yet, have him come on this blog and say so himself.

EHS on the Israeli radio - Must read this Blog!!
http://norad4u.blogspot.com/2012/07/ehs-on-israeli-radio-continue.html
"Attorney Dafna Tachovr is right, following are the errors in studies on radiation sensitivity
Common errors in studies on radiation sensitivity:..................
Not all subjects are sensitive to all kinds and type of radiation. Some are extremely sensitive to GSM phone (like me), some are particularly sensitive to the WIFI or UMTS. Some are extremely sensitive to low frequency voltage lines. This fact was not taken into account, and no wonder that some subject could not identify the radiation.........
Not every EHS person can feel any level of radiation immediately.............
These errors indicate a lack of professionalism and lack of understanding of the people who did the research. Sometimes mistakes are made on purpose to prove that there is no real cause and effect link between radiation and EHS symptoms. People and experts (supposedly) that cite those studies, showed a lack of professionalism and lack of understanding, as often they stop their reading in the title of the study and don't read the full study. The same thing happens in many studies in the field of radiation. If people would read to the end and understand what they read, I guess we would not be having this discossion about does RF or ELF radiation has a biological effect or if EHS is real. It seems that Sadezky is one of those people who did not read pass title of the studies."

No evidence that Smart Meters are necessary or that they benefit customers!

http://www.fosterswift.com/news-publications-Court-Rejects-Detroit-Edisons-Smart-Meter-Program.html

The Michigan Court of Appeals reversed the MPSC’s ruling, and ruled that the MPSC erred in letting Detroit Edison increase its rates to pay for the smart meters. The Court reasoned that the MPSC erred in approving funding for the smart meter program because evidence was lacking that the meters were needed, or would benefit customers. Therefore, the Court ruled that the rate increase was unreasonable because it was not supported by competent, material or substantial evidence.

There is no question in my mind, that the utilities have gotten away with the Smart meter roll out, because the ratepayers did not understand what is happening, trusted that their respective PSC, and PUCs were looking after them and their best interests.
As the ratepayers wise up, they take appropriate action, and the longer they wait it just costs more to right up the situation.

So The sooner Maryland ratepayers wake up the Better.
Just keep spreading the word.. Say NO to Smart meters, File the OPT-OUT Notice to your utility.

"Research on the potential dangers surrounding the mobile phones/masts, wifi and wireless technology is to be presented to the UK Chief Medical Officer by Iain Duncan Smith, current Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and previously leader of the Conservative Party from September 2001 to October 2003. The Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith founded the Centre for Social Justice, an independent think tank not affiliated with the Conservative Party.

The Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith held an audience with the Forward Ladies group in Manchester on Thursday 5th July. He spoke about the introduction of the universal credit under the Government’s welfare reforms, which will mean that people returning to work from benefits will continue to receive some state support. This will help to give families, especially young people and long term unemployed, the necessary skills, ambitions and values by focusing on the importance of work and hopefully lead towards less dependence on the state health and welfare system." ...

"Looming Health Crisis: Wireless Technology and the Toxification of America"
"America's Telecom-friendly Policy for RF Exposure

A growing body of medical studies is now linking cumulative RF exposure to DNA disruption, cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, and autoimmune diseases. Smart meters significantly contribute to an environment already polluted by RF radiation through the pervasive stationing of cellular telephone towers in or around public spaces and consumers’ habitual use of wireless technologies. In the 2000 Salzburg Resolution European scientists recommended the maximum RF exposure for humans to be no more than one tenth of a microwatt per square centimeter. In the United States RF exposure limits are 1,000 microwatts per centimeter, with no limits for long term exposure.[4] Such lax standards have been determined by outdated science and the legal and regulatory maneuvering of the powerful telecommunications and wireless industries."

2) "Comparing radiation from wireless devices such as smart meters to coffee and an Asian pickling agent is minimizing the risks of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in an attempt to support the exposure of all people and families to a known possible cancer promoting agent. All this in the name of business and profits."

Well that certainly sound objective. The problem here, is that the WHO study was made for cellphones and not for smart meters. They are used differently.

5) "Cigarettes used to be everywhere, but they were never safe. The same situation exists today with regard to wireless devices of all kinds, which also includes cordless phones."

What is the logic here? We all know cigarettes are dangerous. What does that have to do smart meters? Substance please?

6) "Dr. Henry Lai of the University of Washington has analyzed scientific outcomes, and has found that only 25% of industry funded studies find biological effects, while 75% of non-industry funded studies find biological effects."

Dr. Lai is not an "independent." He is an alarmist. And I suppose he gets to make the definition of "industry funded" and "independent." He can pretty much skew the statistics any way he chooses.

7) “A major programme of research into the specific features of these
effects such as genotoxicity of waves (REFLEX programme), funded
by the European Commission and involving 12 European research
teams, was launched and the results were made public in December
2004. The conclusions of the report were disturbing on several counts
as the results bore out genotoxic effects of mobile telephone waves,
and in particular greater frequency of chromosomal deletions and
breakup of DNA molecules in different types of cultivated human and
animal cells."

The REFLEX was compromised by strong evidence of tampering, run by a Tobacco Scientist who was perviously accused of stonewalling cigarette research by the WHO and was the subject a "expression of concern" from one of its publishers when the misconduct was brought to their attention.

http://www.springerlink.com/content/5022080g32010570/fulltext.pdf?MUD=MP

The results of the REFLEX program have not been reproduced (perhaps because they were not legitimate).

12) "Daniel Hirsch, senior lecturer and expert on nuclear policy at UCSC, explains that he has analyzed the exposure comparison and he concludes that smart meter exposure is actually 100 times greater than that of a cell phone."

I don't know what type of scientist is Daniel Hirsch, but I have seen no justification for those numbers -- just a youtube of this internet blowhard.

What the alarmists don't tell you is that the neighbors signal is attenuated by the square of the distance from the transmitter. That's a pretty fundamental concept to forget, unless you are planning on deceiving your audience.

What if your mobile phone is giving you brain cancer?

"There are three undisputed facts about the link between mobile phones and brain tumours. Firstly, the jury is still out. Secondly, the number of mobile phone users is increasing rapidly and currently stands at over five billion worldwide. Thirdly, IF there is a causal link between exposure to non-ionising radiation and brain tumours, then the social and financial consequences would be devastating and on a scale never before witnessed in history."

" . . . when I got to the end of one cul de sac, I had my first sighting ever of a "Medusa" or "collector meter" which I want to share so you know what it looks like. The collector meter is the same diameter as the other smart meters (called relay meters) but it rests on a "cuff" so it extends out more. It contains three antennas instead of two. They call it a "collector" meter because it collects the information from several hundred other smart meters and then transmits that information wirelessly to the utility company. Because it is more "active," it emits more radiation. This was a San Diego Gas and Electric Itron Meter. I think this homeowner might want to get on the analog list . . ....When I got home I saw my own walkway, which is on the other side of my neighbor's smart meter, had a new pile of dead bees. This, dead bees in our garden, is a new occurrence. Smart Meter Dangers: The Health Hazards of Wireless Electromagnetic Radiation Exposure
The Latest from Dr. David O. Carpenter

by Dr. Ilya Sandra Perlingieri

"With broken and unethical global social mores, this is considered standard business practice: to deceive customers, while gaining enormous profits. As long as a “revolving-door” policy remains between corporations and [no longer] public agencies, citizens will not have their medically validated concerns ever addressed. The corporate bottom line, profit, is what counts –not our well-being and safety. Further, the synergistic effects of various wireless technologies combined with other environmental toxins to which we all are exposed daily have not been tested.

Over the past year, I have already personally seen the damage these dangerous meters have done to numerous people and several animals I know --all across the US. Although not generally reported by mainstream media, the serious impacts on peoples’ health are already evident. A short list includes: neurological impairment, ear pain and hearing problems, breathing dysfunctions, chest pains and heart ailments, burning skin, sleep disturbances, headaches, depression, vision troubles, blood pressure changes, sterility, autism, and neurodegenerative diseases. There are numerous reports of people who are completely incapacitated from EMF exposure. Several people I know are almost ....." More....>>>>

VOX POPULI..Let them hear Us Loud and Clear!

"Dear MSMA Member,

Because we realize some of you do not have enough time to go on line and download a letter to your delegates, we are making it very easy for you to get involved. While letters and face-to-face meetings are much more effective, signing the petition below is much simpler and will have some impact. The petition urges your Maryland Delegates to support the NO FEE OPT OUT House Bill 1038 introduced by Delegate Glenn Glass. Please by all means feel free to forward this message to any non MSMA member who might respond favorably. Click on the link below to add your name.
