BLOG: Let's Wake Up So Our Kids Can Sleep

I thought I'd share a bit of what I sent to our petition signers for Start School Later this week:

"Sadly, we've lost a bit of steam, gaining less than 200 signatures from last week.  We are doing quite a bit at Start School Later, from making presentations at local meetings, collaborating with sleep researchers and book authors and responding to interview requests for both print media and radio.  But this is not enough.

The only way a change of heart like this can happen is if everyone we know is educated on the subject of sleep and the needs of children when determining school schedules.  We plan to go to Washington, DC on the week of March 5, in honor of Sleep Awareness Week, to present our petition.  But, if we don't have at least 5,000 signatures, they will not hear our case.

With only three weeks left, there is no time to lose.  The most effective way to get more signatures is to email five more family, friends and associates about this issue.  They can click http://signon.org/sign/promote-legislation-to?source=s.em.cr&r_by=1525085&mailing_id=2004 to sign our petition.

Another simple, but effective way to increase signatures is to invite five Facebook friends to sign our petition.  Simply post this the petition link (http://signon.org/sign/promote-legislation-to?source=s.em.cr&r_by=1525085&mailing_id=2004) on your Wall Post and tag a few of your friends.  They will be able to see the link, learn about our petition and add their signature.  (To "tag" a friend, simply type @ followed by the first few letters of their name.  Facebook will then recognize and suggest your friends to include on the post).

Every person aged 13 years or older, with a valid email address, is eligible to sign our petition.  If you have anyone in your household that has still not signed the petition, please get them to sign the petition here: http://signon.org/sign/promote-legislation-to?source=s.em.cr&r_by=1525085&mailing_id=2004

We have just over 3,100 signatures.  Let's make it 4,000 by February 16th.  If there is still more you would like to do, check out the links below for how you can get involved.  You can also email me with your contact information if you would like to partner with us.

Thank you for advocating for the health, safety and equity of American children.

Maribel, did you see this horrifying story today in the Washington Post. A 15-year-old girl in Fairfax Co, VA (where high schools start at 7:20 a.m.) was sexually assaulted while walking to her school bus stop at 6:20 a.m.? All the other arguments aside, how can we justify sending our kids out every morning like this? http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/fairfax-county-police-15-year-old-girl-sexually-assaulted-while-walking-to-school-bus/2012/02/10/gIQAPW0X3Q_shttp://www.washingtonpost.com/local/fairfax-county-police-15-year-old-girl-sexually-assaulted-while-walking-to-school-bus/2012/02/10/gIQAPW0X3Q_story.htmltory.html

I agree Terra. This is alarming. And, yet, we have a few sites where parents that are against starting schools later accuse Start School Later proponents of coddling their kids, letting them be lazy and not being responsible. We have heard plenty of parents saying, "Grow up, the science doesn't prove anything". And, yet, even without the science, common sense just cries out. What are we DOING to our kids??!!

It is a lamentable thing indeed. Just after I wrote this blog post, I lost sleep last night because of a petition signer, Tyler of Odgen, UT, who wrote: "Being tired every day is, I think, one of the reasons behind my suicidal impulses."

What alarms me even more is that there are many Tylers who have not and will not speak up about this issue until it is too late.

It is time to wake up and start listening to the needs of our children. Sign the petition. Stop the insanity. Defend the rights and needs of children who do not have a choice but have to tough it out in the "real world" so that school administrations can save a few dollars. What good is it to "save money" on bus runs if we are losing our children as a result.

Maribel - I know you and I have spoken on the phone briefly about this issue. It may be helpful if you could include the links for the scientific information on sleep deprivation so that others can read this for themselves. Until we spoke, I was unaware of the correlation between suicide and sleep deprivation. I would be very interested to read the information, as I think others may be too.

As for the common sense issue of this being a safety concern for many walking to school in the dark, that goes without saying.

Krystine, thank you for your thoughtful post. There are many studies out there linking sleep deprivation with suicidal thoughts. Here is just one link which explains the issue: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/connie-bennett/take-your-meds-not-prescr_b_799499.html

Also, the CDC Notes that sleep deprivation is a public health epidemic: http://www.cdc.gov/features/dsSleep/

Teens especially, are hit hard because they are typically unable to fall asleep before 11pm but are required to get up only 6-7 hours later to get ready for school. They need 8-10 hours of sleep.

More info can be found here: http://www.startschoollater.net/myths-and-misconceptions.html

I hope this answers some questions and informs our readers about this problem.
