BLOG: Edwards and 4th Congressional District - Now Including Severna Park

Last week the District 33 Democratic Club had a special guest speaker, Donna Edwards, the first term Congresswoman from Congressional District 4.  She represents parts of Prince George's and Montgomery Counties, and is now going to represent a chunk of Anne Arundel County — including Severna Park, Arnold and some of Pasadena.  I decided to attend the meeting so I could observe first hand her positions and her persona.

The meeting was in a back room of Perry's in Odenton.  I'd never been there before and the accomodations were comfortable with a bar set-up and waitresses taking food orders and bringing dinners to the club members throughout the meeting. The club took care of some business items before Ms. Edwards spoke and to her credit she patiently waited until it was her time.

There were many things I found very interesting: First she didn't really answer questions and second, she was very careful about how she spoke of our current two Republican members of Congress from Maryland. She repeatedly referred to Congressman Harris and Congressman Bartlett as "Mr. Harris and Mr. Bartlett." Both of them, in addition to being Congressmen, are doctors - Bartlett having a doctorate degree in Physiology and Harris being a medical doctor of Anesthesiology. But she continually called them both 'Mr.' as if they were your neighborhood pharmacist or grocer.  As opposed to her reference to "Senator Cardin", when she discussed his being one of the sponsors of SOPA and that he "has now seen the error of his ways."

Congresswoman Edwards spoke of her beginnings growing up in the military, her educational background and early work experience.  She worked for example as a community organizer - just like our current president - and she is an attorney - just like our current president.  YouTube videos show her at public events such as rallies with Van Jones, the self avowed Communist who was forced to resign as Obama’s Green Czar when it became public knowledge he is a Communist.

One of the items she spoke of was the Constitutional Amendment she’s introduced in response to the Supreme Court’s decision (SCOTUS) that Corporations are allowed to contribute unlimited funds to candidates.  She feels it allows incumbents to have an unfair advantage.  Yet she attended a DNC fundraiser that was specifically given for incumbent Democrats that cost $5,000 to $75,000 a plate.  Not all is fair in love, war and apparently politics.

She also had a stint at the human microphone with the D.C. Protestors outside the Willard Hotel after the DNC fundraiser.  Her words to the protesters were, “I stand by the 99 percent.  In my district are the 99 percent.  People who have lost their homes.  People who’ve lost their jobs. People whose income is below $50,000 per year, the lowest median income in decades. It’s not fair. It’s not right.”

We are the United States of America.  When did “fairness” become the main focus of this nation?  I believe this shows the hypocrisy of the Democratic party’s insistence that it is the party of the people, when it can so easily speak out of both sides of it’s collective mouth.

By the way, apparently Senator Barbara Boxer thinks the title that she worked so hard to get is worth being addressed by it, Congresswoman Edwards.

I personally believe in doing the right thing, as defined by my own standards, not what’s someone else’s definition of fair.

EDITOR'S NOTE: On Jan. 24, Amy Leahy posted a similar version of this article. A commenter pointed out what she thought was a factual error pertaining to the name of the democratic club. On Jan. 27 an update to the blog and correction were submitted and added to the blog post above.

Because of a glitch this afternoon while I was still working on this blog post, The Patch posted it without me being able to finish…so if it seems unfinished ….IT IS! I spoke with Leslie Hunt who will update it for me once I get the rest done.

Uh oh, I sense that Amy does not want a Democrat representing Severna Park....By the way, I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat

God forbid she didn't use the term "Dr." when addressing them. You are really nitpicking now, aren't you?

I'm glad that Amy Leahy came to our meeting to "observe" and "listen" to Rep. Edwards. Our meetings are open to the public and all opinions are welcomed. But "observing" and "listening" are the operative words here. Our club was incorrectly identified by Ms. Leahy as it was the 33rd Democratic Club who hosted the Congresswoman: West County Democratic Club members were our guests. This event was even posted as such in the Severna Park Patch and in The Capital newspaper. Also, Our club's president announced at the onset of the meeting, "Welcome to the 33rd Democratic Club meeting" and announced West County as our guests- they were invited to stand. I just wanted to clear that up for those who were "observing and listening."

How disappointing to read that after "listening and observing" Rep. Edwards for over an hour, Ms. Leahy's only reaction was that the Congresswoman addressed Reps. Harris and Bartlett as Mr. and not Dr. (implying that she was disrespectful) Seriously? That was your primary take on the evening? You couldn't find anything positive from the very beginning? I'll wait to read the rest of your entry.

If that's all you got out of it, you were hearing or not hearing only what you wanted to.

As a guest - a Republican guest - I chose not to stand when the offer was made. Clearly I just wanted to observe her. It was a very welcoming event - especially since I was able to catch up with a couple of old friends who I used to work with - but then there were members of the club who, since they felt free to speak their minds without fear of Republicans in the room, really spoke their minds about Republicans in general and Congressman Harris in particular.

Ms Leahy neglected to say that her welcome to the Club was warm, that the meeting was upbeat and delightful. Congresswoman Edwards demonstrated her vast background and her desire to work with all members of Congress - regardless of Party.
It was refreshing to hear a member of Congress with such statesmanlike ideas. I took from the meeting a relief that finally, we have a Representative without guile. If anyone would like to meet Congresswoman Edwards personally, she will be in the neighborhood at a house party on Feb. 13. For more info - contact me. Ann Marie Remillard. amremillard@comcast.net

Ms Remillard, the event was pleasant but hard to listen to club members speak with such obvious dislike for Republicans. I was uncomfortable with that (and I expected my presence would not be well received if known) which is why I tried to stay low-key. It's very sad to see our two parties at war with one another, which is what it feels like in recent years.

WOW! I was at the same meeting as Ms Leahy and I too left with as much emotion as she apparently did. However I certainly heard much more than the three paragraphs above and encourage everyone to seek out an opportunity to meet Mrs Edwards... er.. uh Congresswoman Edwards. I have seen few others outside of Sarbanes who have been so genuinely interested in our collective welfare and not partisan politics. I was supremely impressed with Congresswoman Edward's intellect, grasp of her job, and her empathy in relating to all people and all representatives. "She was very careful about how she spoke of...." Of course she was. She was carefully respectful. Don't take my word that this is a Congresswoman to support and to watch. Find an opportunity to meet her and form your own opinion. I suggest you will be VERY favorably impressed.

Donna Edwards is a very poor fit for the 4th District. We need much better. She is a far left liberal --- another Obama bot. We need a common sense conservative.

HMJ, Perhaps the 4th District is not a good match for Congresswoman Edward's talents, experience, and education but we won't find anyone better. Having someone represent us who is so well qualified and open to non-partisanship, I think we voters certainly will benefit from her representation. She is what we have and if we work together we can help her help us. I hope you have an opportunity to know her.

I was one of the folks who spoke up at the meeting, not about Republicans, but about Andy Harris. I in fact contrasted his inflexible "my-way-or-the-highway" dogmatism, which makes me embarrassed to be one of his constituents, with the approach of Roscoe Bartlett, a Republican who actually thinks about each issue on its merits, respects the views of others (and the findings of the scientific community), and commendably worked together on legislation with Donna Edwards, which she cited during her address. I have a lot of respect for people who want to solve problems, regardless of their party, and who are willing to make reasonable compromises in order to do so. While you may disagree with Ms. Edwards' political views, she is not at all a "bot" of any kind -- she will listen to you and take your views into consideration without pre-judging anything. I think that came across pretty clearly last week at the meeting. -- Bill Flook, President, 33rd Dems

She was being very careful about her socialist positions because it was her first venture into Anne Arundel County. Generally speaking we are not the same make-up politically as Prince George's County which has a larger make-up of government workers…therefore they tend to vote Democrat. I find that where there are more private sector workers, there are more Republicans who are are vested in entrepreneurship.

Actually, Lindsey there are no qualifications necessary to write a blog. Anyone can do it. I will tell you though that I research what I say. If you don't believe me about her politics, look it up yourself.

Amy,
You express dismay at the two parties being "at war with each other," yet you don't seem to realize (or maybe you do) that you are contributing to that dynamic. Throwing out words like "socialist" and making snarky comparisons to Obama tend to inflame those who don't share those views. And I'm sure worse than that gets said at any Republican gathering about the President, or at least is as offensive. I appreciate your candor and believe that you truly believe what you write as being truthful and accurate. I think I'll choose to skip reading your blog because it kind of gives me chest pains. No offense.

Laurie, that's why I get to do a blog….not everyone agrees with what Obama is doing or what Donna Edwards believes in. You are welcome to read the Washington Post - it will not give you chest pains.
