New Thriller Filming in Severna Park this Summer

'The Sick' will begin filming in Severna Park and the surrounding area between April and June of 2013, the film's executive producer Andrea Baker said.

A suspense thriller in the vein of Hitchcock will soon be filming in Severna Park. The Sick, from Prosense Productions, will begin filming in Severna Park and the surrounding area between April and June of 2013, the film's executive producer Andrea Baker said.  The film, directed by Felix Penzarella based on a concept by Baker, is a throwback to the days of Alfred Hitchhock's thrillers. The idea of the film delves into a couple's relationship and their circumstances regarding an unknown illness. The Sick has been in development and preproduction since 2011. Over the weekend, the crew spent time interviewing dozens of candidates during a casting call in Washington DC in which they were seeking actors for more than 10 roles. The production …

Natural Beauty Captured in Kinder Farm Photo Contest

Four winners were announced in the Kinder Farm Park Photo Contest.

From hot iron to lush grasses to a calm pond— a wide array of natural beauty is on display among the four winners of the Kinder Farm Park Photo Contest. The Friends of Kinder Farm Park annually host a photo contest to highlight the assortment of treasures that can be found there. The winners of the 2012 contest were recently announced on the Friends website. 'Little Mermaid, Jr.' Auditions Start Saturday at Children's Theater

The next production of CTA will begin in April. Auditions start now.

The next production of the Children's Theatre of Annapolis (CTA) will take audiences under the sea. Auditions for Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr. will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. CTA recently closed its teen production, Legally Blonde: The Musical, and is now offering younger performers the chance to share their talents. This weekend’s auditions are open to performers ages 8 to 14 looking to take the stage. There is no fee to audition but all auditioners must be members of CTA. Yearly individual ($10) memberships and family ($25) memberships will be available at auditions, according to a release. Auditioners are instructed to prepare a song that shows their vocal ability and bring along a …

SPHS Band Floozie Competes in Battle of the Bands

Severna Park students will play live along with 11 other high school bands this Saturday.

The 15th annual Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands competition is set to kick off Saturday night at Maryland Hall.  The Capital Gazette recently provided profiles on each of the 12 bands performing, of which 11 will be in competition for the best of show. The winner of the competition will get studio time to record one of their songs professionally in Studio A of Wright Way Studios. Proceeds from the event going to the music departments of the top four bands. Severna Park High School student-led band Floozie will be among the bands in competition for the top spot. ‘Argo’ Wins Golden Globe, Nominated for Oscar

Lee Schatz, a resident of Severna Park for 22 years, was one of the six American diplomats hiding for his life during the 1979 Iranian crisis as depicted in the movie.

Argo took home a Golden Globe for best drama and Ben Affleck earned recognition for his directing of the film during Sunday night’s Golden Globes. The political thriller is also up for the Academy Awards' best picture nomination. Argo holds a special meaning for one Severna Park man. Lee Schatz, an area resident for 22 years, was one of six American diplomats hiding in the homes of Canadian diplomats in Tehran after fleeing the embassy as it was occupied by Iran. In the film, Schatz’s character is given the given the identity of Henry W. Collins, a cameraman during his escape. Last Chance: Vertical Horizon’s Matt Scannell at Severn School

Tickets to the event are sold out, but there will be an opportunity for walk-up seats.

Severn School will host a concert with Vertical Horizon’s founding member Matt Scannell Friday night as part of its launch of the Dillon Moran Musician in Residence Program. Tickets for the event are sold out, but there will be an opportunity for walk-up seating. Severn School Director of Communications Kristyn Kuhn said they have had some cancellations and will allow additional people into the concert on a first-come, first-serve basis. Kuhn recommends that those without a ticket arrive to the school around 6 p.m. They will enter through a different door and be admitted based on arrival time. “I have received emails about cancellations so I know there are going to be open seats. Severna Park Students To Perform Alongside BSO Musicians

During a special concert on Thursday, students will play with some of the world's best musicians.

Twenty-nine highly talented students from eight county high schools are slated to perform alongside the world-class musicians from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in a special concert on Thursday. The following students from Severna Park High School will participate: According to an Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) press release, the opportunity is the result of from a long-standing collaboration between the school system and the BSO. SPHS Students Shine in ‘Les Mis’

The show opened on Friday night and received a standing ovation from the crowd.

When one attends a high school musical, especially one as difficult to execute as Les Misérables, some awkward moments are to be expected. There is usually a song sung off-key, a lead role that is a little weak and some miscues on stage. Overall the performance is usually well done, but it has a few problems you overlook because it is just high school kids. That is not the case when it comes to Les Misérables at Severna Park High School. The musical opened on Friday night and was so well-done parts of the show actually gave me goose bumps. If you didn’t make it to Les Mis this past weekend, I highly recommend you go this week and here is why: Fantine’s (Bronwyn vanJoolen) death scene will put a tear in your eye; Thenardier’s (Evan Bradley-…

Part 2: Les Mis Cast Sounds Off Before Opening Night

Les Misérables will open on Friday night at Severna Park High School.

Patch caught up with the cast of Les Misérables at Severna Park High School during tech week to ask about their favorite parts in the upcoming show. Les Mis opens at 7 p.m. on Friday and involves 75 to 80 students in the cast and crew. The show will also run on Saturday at 7 p.m. and then Nov. 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. with a matinee performance on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased in advance, or on the day of the performance.
