After an intense overtime, the Severna Park Ice Hockey team overcame Washington County to gain the title of state champions. Severna Park defeated Washington 5-4 Monday night in Laurel.
Severna Park and Washington were tied 4-4 after the third period, but after a nearly five-minute overtime, Nick Bondra scored the winning goal, securing Severna Park's state title.
Severna Park Ice Hockey is a composite team, consisting of players from Severna Park High School, Severn School and Chesapeake High School.
Severna Park High School's varsity girls basketball team also had a big win Monday night, landing a 56-37 victory over Old Mill to send SPHS into the Class 4A east region semifinals.
The Severna Park Falcons are on a winning streak, having secured the last seven games. After receiving a No. 12 seed in the MPSSAA tournament, Severna Park took down No. 5 Glen Burnie 63-28, before defeating No. 4 Old Mill on Monday.
The Falcons will face No. 1 North Point High School in the region semifinals on Wednesday.
