Finishing up his fifth season as coach of the Severna Park High School swim team, coach Mike McTammany is pleased overall with the team's performance this season.
McTammany said he is most proud of the way the younger swimmers developed. Of the swimmers at the state championships, six of the nine girls and five of the eight boys who competed were freshmen.
Experimenting with technology this year with video sessions featuring US Swimming training videos on stroke techniques and taping swimmers at meets and in practice helped to instruct the team on improving their techniques, he said. Undefeated in the county for boys, McTammany said he’s hoping to minimize distractions and better prepare the team mentally for the bigger meets next year.
Standouts this year, said McTammany, are junior Kevin Huntley who was the top male performer, placing third in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke at the state championship on Saturday.
Another standout is senior co-captain Marissa Hand, the top female swimmer placing eighth in 50-yard freestyle and ninth in 100-yard freestyle at states, McTammany said.
Also mentioned as key swimmers are junior co-captains John Bachkosky and Olivia Roy; sophomore Sophie Dietrich; and freshman Sasha Mrose-Boles—all were individual qualifiers at states.
This is a list of the combined (boys and girls) team standings, and their points. Severna Park made it to 13th place, second in the county overall:
