SPHS Senior's YouTube Prom Proposal Gets a 'Yes'

Popping the prom question has become part of the package for seniors attending the class dance.

Adam Narimatsu had only one viewer in mind on his latest YouTube video—his girlfriend, Sarah Kelly.

The Severna Park High School senior, already known in the community for his weekly YouTube music videos, produced a "A Public Service Announcement" prom proposal to Sarah, a junior at the school.

She viewed the video at his home thinking it was his latest music video. Sarah was surprised at the end when Adam asked her to the prom. She accepted with a "yes."

"Thank God," Adam said.

The video portrays the obstacles Adam faces when traveling to ask Sarah to the prom. After saving a stuffed animal horse lodged in a tree in front of his house, then confronting a ninja (played by senior Devin McCord) on a path at Kinder Farm Park, he finally pops the question at the end.

The video has about 1,700 views so far.

Making YouTube music videos is a pastime for Adam. He has a following under the name savedbythemerv, which he and Devin use to post a new YouTube video once a week on Sundays for their growing audience.

"Quite a few people watch them," Adam said.

Adam, a musician, involved with the school's annual Rock 'n' Roll Revival,  considered popping the prom question at one of the performances in March, but making a video to put on YouTube captured his imagination.

"I was thinking of ways to do it and a lot of people thought Rock 'n' Roll Revival would be one option," Adam said.

Making the video was more his style he decided.

"I had more fun asking her [by making the video] than I will at the prom," he chuckled.

Adam is heading to Towson University in the fall where he'll be most likely studying music, he said.

Severna Park's prom is Saturday at the BWI Hilton.
