SPHS Field Hockey Team Closes up Shop Until Next Season

Field Hockey head coach Lil Shelton spotted buying snacks for "final breakdown" of equipment, no answer on retirement plans.

The field hockey season is over for the state champions from Severna Park High School, who are busy with the "final breakdown" today (Tuesday), when all of the equipment and goals are put away, the balls are counted and stored, and the closets locked until next season.

Patch spotted longtime head coach Lil Shelton shopping for snacks at the Food Lion in Severna Park to help the JV and Varsity teams energize for the end of season ritual. Reflecting on the team's success, Shelton said the girls worked "unbelievably hard" for the 4A title and commented that she, her staff and the teams had a great time this season.

"I'm just the one who cracks the whip," she chuckled.

Next is the banquet for the girls and their families on Thursday night (Nov. 17) at the Severna Park United Methodist Church where the coaching staff will have some fun after dinner with a few fun practical joke awards for each player.

When asked if she would return as head coach again next year, Shelton said that retiring after winning 20 state championships would be appropriate, but she's not made a final decision yet.

*Editor's note: This post has been changed to reflect Lil Shelton coaching the team to 20 state championships.
