POLL: Would You Swim in the Magothy River?
The Magothy River Association released its findings earlier this week on the health of the river which is still getting a failing grade.
The recent news that the Magothy River once again received a D- grade in terms of overall health—the same grade the river received in 2011 is met with dismay by those who live in the watershed.
Patch contributor John Dawson attended and reported on Wednesday night's MRA State of the Magothy annual meeting where Dr. Peter Bergstrom of the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office stated that levels of dissolved oxygen, especially in the creeks, and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) increased from less than two acres in 2010 to approximately seven acres in 2011. He added that these gains were offset by a decline in water clarity.
This is disappointing news to the Severna Park residents who use the waterway for boating, fishing, crabbing...and swimming?

We enjoy skiing, tubing and floating in the Magothy. Our boat has a portable shower so we just rinse off as soon as we get out of the water.

Just make sure you or others do not have any open cuts or wounds. Especially important precaution for two to three days after a heavy rain fall.

I swam in the Magothy last summer. Sadly, compared to the Severn River, it was like a pure mountain lake. There are times after a big rain where I will not go in the Severn due to nasty looking brown bubbles, undoubtedly from failing septic systems
