Poll: Will Leelyn Drive Expansion Help Chick-fil-A Traffic?

Do you think making improvements to Leelyn Drive will help with the traffic a Chick-fil-A could bring?

Last week, Patch reported that the Chick-fil-A slated to fill the former KFC on Ritchie Highway will need to make improvements to Leelyn Drive before it can open.

“There are road improvements that need to be done on the Chick-fil-A side of Leelyn Drive,” said Tracie Reynolds, a spokesperson for Anne Arundel Planning and Zoning. “They need to make Leelyn Drive wider to help with traffic.”

The eventual opening of a Chick-fil-A in Severna Park has been a hot topic of conversation amongst area residents who worry the popular fast food chain will bring traffic problems.

The Starbucks located next to Leelyn Drive already causes problems and some fear a Chick-fil-A will only lead to more headaches.

Since improvements will be made to Leelyn Drive, do you think traffic will still be a concern when the Chick-fil-A opens? Vote in our poll.

So true, John....what a cluster- **** this will be. We didn't need a(nother) Starbucks on top off all the others and certainly can drive 5 minutes north to the other Chik-Fil-A. Lord save us from the politicians that look the other way and allow this to clog up our already congested intersections. Prediction? Increase in accidents for the sake of over-salted fried chicken meals.

Starbucks causes so many problems with traffic around it. Cars are lined up on the main road to get into it in the mornings and evenings. Why doesn't Starbucks pay for road improvements and whatever is needed to resolve THAT problem.

I look forward to a Chic Fil A in Severna Park. I am not sure why it's being put on them to fix the traffic problems. Starbucks should have to take responsibility too. Since they opened the back ups are ridiculous. The intersection of Leelyn and Asbury is where they need to focus their attention.

As much as I want to see a Chic Fil A in Severna Park I don't believe it will improve the traffic flow around Leelyn Drive. Morning traffic will get worse. Morning commuting will get worse as those people who have to have their Starbucks and Chicken biscuits every morning. On the other hand I'm willing to cope with it to get my favorite fast food restaurant.

They can start fixing the problem by changing the traffic pattern. The Starbucks traffic needs to be rerouted for a One Way in and One Way out from Leelyn. Half the congestion is trying to get in when someone else is trying to get out.

How about an over pass or bridge over that mile of congestion....frustrating what is taking place in our hometown village

As it stands right now, the parking for Starbucks is horrendous and customers park at Goska's...who then in turn has vehicles towed, or threatens it at least. Where on earth is the parking for a chic-fil-a going to be created? There does not need to be a chic fil a in that location. God help the folks who live in that area.

I don't think that site is larger enough for a Chick fil a. Unless they find a way to incorporate the adjacent park and ride that ironically enough is always empty.

WHAT A JOKE. K.O.C. LOT IS 3 TO 4 TIMES THE SIZE OF STARBUCKS, YET STARBUCKS WAS NOT REQUIRED TO MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE ROAD. IT IS NOT THE TRAFFIC, IT IS WHAT CHICK FIL A STANDS FOR. BY THE WAY MS. GARDINER, YOU SHOULD TRY CHICK FIL A HAS LESS SALT THAN ANY OTHER CHICKEN.

Here's a possible solution:
Starbucks - One way parking lot; Entrance only from Rt.2, entrance only from Goska's, right-hand turn exit only onto leelyn.

Chick-fil-a - Similar setup: entrance only from Rt.2, Entracnce only from Northern Leelyn Entrance, Right-turn-exit only onto leelyn.

Traffic flow goes south on Leelyn: Turn right at the circle at arundel beach for Rt.2 North; turn right at McKinsey Rd for Rt.2 South. No outgoing flow will go towards the Intersection at Goska's (which is the real problem intersection).

Nick, your logic is flawless and your flow is well thought out. It would work great. If people followed it. My observations are that this entire area confuses people to the point that they completely disregarding the traffic laws.

Agreed Warren. I don't know how many times I have sat at the light of Leelyn and Ritchie to watch several people make an illegal left hand turn. The Starbucks traffic pattern causes several bottlenecks it that small space. I live in a neighborhood behind the Starbucks and proposed Chick-Fil-A and traffic is horrendeous right now I can only imagine when Chick-Fil-A opens its doors.

So the problem is stupid people not following laws...what else is new? However, I don't think we can plan for the lowest 10%; we need to get 90% of people though the area in a fast, safe, and efficient manner. In the end, drivers need to be defensive and watch for people making shortcuts, illegal turns, and other silly stuff.

Few have mentioned that several Severna Park residents live in homes on Leelyn Drive. It is in effect a short residential street, although admittedly in the last few years many folks use it as their commuter shortcut to Pasadana. Couldn't Chic-Filet perhaps make their entrances and exits all on good old commercial mecca Rt 2 and leave the families on Leelyn Drive (which by the way is part of a lovely, quiet, neighborhood, Arundel Plaza) to live in relative peace?

I agree with you Cynthia, if I am not mistaken, KFC, Mr. Tire and Starbucks are the only businesses in Severna Park that empty out on a road that has home's on it. If Royal Farms can survive with RT 2 ent and exit, why can't the others. Keep Severna Park residential friendly.
