POLL: Should Leopold Resign?
In light of the recent indictment, Patch asks if the Anne Arundel County executive should step down.
On Wednesday, an Anne Arundel County grand jury indicted County Executive John Leopold on four counts of misconduct in office and one count of fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary, according to a press release.
The state prosecutor's office announced Friday that Leopold is accused of using his executive protection staff to escort him to a parking lot for “sexual activity with another county employee [in 2010].”
In light of these allegations, do you think Leopold should resign or step down temporarily? Cast your vote below in our poll.

Leopold is innocent until proven guilty. Isn't that what America is about? These allegations have been going on for sometime now. Let him have his day in court. If he is found guilty of a crime, then the County will need to follow the law on removal or discipline, or Leopold can offer his resignation.

He knows if he's guilty or not. If he's guilty, he should man up and accept the consequences now.

What's the saying? Innocent until proven guilty.
If politicians stepped down every time there was an accusation of wrong doing, we would be holding elections continuously .

He's a slimeball.......meet him once and he was all over my girlfriend at the time. He had his staff track her down and called her constantly.....It was only a matter of time his behavior caught up with him and I hope he gets what he deserves.....He is a typical polititican who thinks he's above the law and everyone else. What the county needs to do is cut the salaries of the executive & council members in half. This way people who truely have the best interest of the citizens will run for those positions. Good riddence to Leopold

Maryland Democrats are going after any and all MD Republicans in more ways than one. Hopefully they will use that same energy to eliminate the corrupt voting machines.

I agree people are innocent until proven guilty. But as Ryan said, Leopold knows he's guilty. Let's not waste time and money on a trial. Just resign so we can all move on.

You're misquoting Ryan. He said "Leopold knows IF he's guilty". There's a big difference. Certainly if he is guilty he should step down. I doubt that if one of your family members was accused of a crime you would consider a trial is a waste of time and money.

Speaking of guilty, I confess I'm also guilty of misquoting Ryan. I paraphrased Ryan, but used quotation marks. Anyhow, I got the idea right.

Clinton didn't, so the bar is lowered. Deal with it. Maybe he shouldn't have been given a pass, huh?

Ah, the "BUT CLINTON!!!" defense - the refuge of the morally bankrupt. Too bad that it ignores the fact that he didn't do anything illegal.

Ryan - Clinton did do something illegal...he lied under oath. And the legacy Clinton left behind is the belief on the part of teens that oral sex is not really sex.

He did? He certainly wasn't convicted of doing so.

Why lying under oath thing? You mean that thing that he was never convicted of? As far as I know, it isn't illegal to cheat on your wife either.
What people do with their personal lives is their business. Leopold included. When that crosses the line into breaking the law, then it becomes time to step aside.

so you think it is okay for the president to cheat on his wife, with an intern or a few in the oval office! and lie to the american people about it! and there was that lying under oath thing
DioDingo

Well....oral sex isn't really sex. We can go around the bush about that for a long time so lets agree to disagree. Clinton lied under oath to protect himself from getting in trouble with his wife. You could even make the point that he didn't lie by turning the questions so much. Leopold possibly used his position to corrupt the process. Used police that were supposed to be protecting the county to monitor campaign signs and to damage opponents. I'm unhappy about him using police to help him have parking lot sex but the police can say they were just doing their job of protecting him. Running interference between two women isn't protecting him and could be seen as a misuse of your protection. If we still want to use the "Clinton" excuse that we are all aware of now, then we should hold office holders to a higher standard then we did then since then we were "naive." Leopold has been in politics long enough to know better. If we want to go back 10 years for the "Clinton", then can we check Leopolds records back 10 years as well? Whatever side you fall on he wasn't doing what he was supposed to be doing. If it turns out to be mostly true then we need a new county exec.

Sir
Your retoric leaves me to believe that anything you do is OK as long as you are not convicted of it in court. Where is your conscience?

The question is not "is he innocent," it remains, "should he step down?" I agree that he should have his day in court, however, I feel that at the very minimum he needs to address the constituents whom he represents with some sort of explaination. Simply pleading guilty and pretending like the multiple allegations are proposterous is not enough.
vw2003
9:40 am on Monday, March 5, 2012
I am sure at some point he will address the constituents after consulting with his lawyers. but those two questions tie into each other if he is innocent he should not step down. but i will say that it is odd that a president of the united states can do the samething and the same people that were okay with that have a problem with these allegations

Leopold is clearly a perv regardless of the commission of a crime, and I'm not even talking about the parking lot sex. Making other grown men empty your urine? Come on....

My feeling is that this is nothing but a modern day witch hunt on the part of the FOP. I find it kind of interesting that all of the "charges" against him, with one exception, are "common law" charges (i.e., he is not alleged to have violated any statutes or codes). Is what he did wrong, immoral, stupid and disgusting (if it is proved to be true)? Absolutely. Whether or not it is illegal is another story entirely. There's already been many that have opined that the state's attorney is going to have a really hard time proving any of these charges. Proving common law charges is quite difficult. And, how on earth is the state's attorney going to prove that he stole Joanna Conti's campaign signs. He'll just claim that his driver (a cop) made up the story because of the poor relations between Leopold and the FOP. This is going to be a "He said, she said" case and Leopold will get the benefit of the doubt. No one has ever been convicted of stupidity or immorality. If it was illegal or immoral to have state/county staff doing "personal errands" for elected officials, then every Delegate/Senator in Annapolis that has ever sent their AA to fetch their lunch would be up on charges. Plus, "Who cares?" Did it affect his service to the citizens of the county...probably not. He's 1+ years into his term and will be term limited out. By the time that these charges go to trial, he'll be back in Hawaii in retirement. (sent from my iPhone)

You should really step back and see the whole picture. It's interesting how you think it's just the FOP that is after Leopold. His "boy" Teare has helped him cover up many misconducts while in office. While they were tearing down campaign signs you don't have to go far to see that under Leopold and Teare the homicide rate in AACO has risen 40%, hang gun assults have risen 52% and on and on from 2009 to 2010. Did it affect his service to the citizens of the county, of course it did. He has done nothing for the county and yet he managed to cut out 44 Police officer positions from the FY2010 budget. Leopold proposed spending millions on a boat ramp and other recreational amenities, but couldn't find money to keep the streets safe. Way to go, let's put less cops on the street and turn a blind eye so you can use your personal police to keep your girlfriends separated and your clothes laundered. These two guys have done a wonderful job of nothing to help the county. Teare himself should be ashamed of the way he presents himself especially with two kids on the force, great role model.

I thought there was a process by which the County Executive could take a leave of absence while under investigation. That seems most appropriate, if found not guilty, then he could resume normal duties.

So when the federal indictments come down on O'Ma;lley before April will all of you demand he resign ?

Under our legal system of governemnt, he is entitled to his day in court, but the investigation and trial should also determine if there was any police coverup. Obviously, his appointed Chief was aware of what was going on from day one!

Diehard republican here. Scott, its at least 3 drivers so no he said she said. Unless you beleive 3 cops would perjure themselves for an "FOP wich hunt". The ussue at hand here is his sociopathic ego. He thinks he can do waht he wants, treat people like disposable diapers and rule with a roual fiat. Well, hes learning that this isnt an absolute monarchy and his BS is so thin now even his toadies are scrambling to get away, one dead and two testifying against him come the day. HE HAS TO GO!!!!!!!

There was enough evidence to indict him, therefore there it is reasonable to ask to him if he will resign and save the taxpayers the time and money. If he chooses not to then he is either innocent, thinks he won't convicted or just the egotistical man a lot of folks think he is.

Two things to remember:
1. There is no defense at a grand jury - it is run by the prosecutor.
2. He hasn't been convicted, except in the press/rumor mill.

Scott, there is no states attorney involvement. This is handled by the State Proescutors Office and they have an EXCELLENT track record. Leopold is in the big leagues now, no local politics he can influence. I also find it very concerning that you would look at this situation and not be offended and upset as a tax payer. Additionally, by your comments it is clear that you do not understand the process or the seriousness of the charges. These are not simply "common law" charges. And lets not forget, this guy is already on trial in the civil arena for the alleged sexual harrassment charges.
And just to end, do you really believe the Anne Arundel County Fraternal Police union have enough power to get the STATE prosectors office to do a year long investigation and get the idiot indicted? Dont let the "R" behind his name blind you, I have an "R" and even I can see whats going on. Open your eyes Scott!

He's not going to step down, he's not that person....

I have been watching Mr Leopold for some time and except for women problems all I see is a man who really stands up for the people of AA Cnty....If you look at what he as done except for his women problems he really fights for us....IE. fairness when it comes to immigration, property taxes, septic problems, school problems and it goes on and on......he has to go by the rules of the land and office so we have to tighten his reigns and let him do the work he has been doing....if he can't do that then he will have to leave and he should hang his head in shame....he as done this to himself.....no one has done this to him...
