POLL: Are You For Once-A-Week Trash Pickup?

With cost savings and recycling in mind, the county is cutting back to once-a-week trash collection starting in June.

If you're throwing a party or expect to have a little more trash due to company coming, you may have to consider how to manage it all within the new once-a-week collection program starting in June.

County Executive John R. Leopold proposed the initiative last January in response to the Recycling Advisory Committee findings suggesting once-a-week trash collection would discourage residents from mixing recyclables with their trash and would save on contracting services for pickup.

Another factor considered was a decrease in neighborhood truck traffic and air emissions and increased recycling in schools.

According to The Maryland Gazette, the money saved will be used to reduce the $315 fee county residents pay for waste pickup through property tax bills. Residential trash collection day will remain the same, but in June, both trash and recyclables will be collected on the same day.

Have always felt twice a week is too much. I know I have much less trash than I used to as I recycle a LOT. I often skip one anyway. I welcome the once-a-week pickup.
It's a bonus if it's saving time/money for the county.

Some of my neighbors don't even put out trash on the second day…sometimes me included. And we don't ever have but one bag to go out anyway on the second day.

ABSOLUTELY! We recycle at least three times what we throw away; we maybe have one or two small bags of trash a week. I am 100% in support of this change.

All for it. We almost never use the trash only pick up. We recycle a lot. Even if you have a party, most of the "trash" is recyclable cans and bottles.

Since we started a concerted effort to recycle, our weekly trash volume has decreased significantly.

Would love to see a reversal...once a week trash....twice a week recycle pick up! We have very little for trash pick-up but often have an overflowing amount of recycle pick-up!

We had a summer home in Va and had the large containers recently disbursed for recyclables for years. We had similar containers for trash. They had trucks with lifts so the men did not have to even touch the containers and all the work was done by the truck itself. Since the containers were large, there was ample room for a 1x a week pickup. Not sure 1x a week will work for us without having larger containers.

I am all for once a week but would like to see the money saved by the county to go towards the schools. The amount we pay for trash pickup is far less than in other counties.

I hardly have one trash can full a week and that is just 1 time a week, Now I have 3 recycle bins I put out and at there are weeks thats not enough. Folks forget you can throw everything but food and, waste foam into the recycle bin. My trash man misses me on Thursdays and its becoming common in several areas where folks know to throw most items into the yellow bin.
