KFC Update: Chick-fil-A Expanding Leelyn Drive

The fast food chain replacing KFC will be responsible for making improvements to Leelyn Drive.

Area residents looking forward to Chick-fil-A in Severna Park will have to wait until the company can expand Leelyn Drive.

Chick-fil-A has signed the lease to take over the old KFC on Ritchie Highway and now has to improve the condition of Leelyn Drive.

“There are road improvements that need to be done on the Chick-fil-A side of Leelyn Drive,” said Tracie Reynolds a spokesperson for Anne Arundel Planning and Zoning. “They need to make Leelyn Drive wider to help with traffic.”

Chick-fil-A also will reconstruct the two entrances into the former KFC parking lot, Reynolds said.

“They have applied for grading permits so once that is approved they will get started,” Reynolds said.

A grading permit must be approved anytime a company plans to “disturb the earth,” which Chick-fil-A will do when they reconstruct the curb and sidewalk. Reynolds said she thought Chick-fil-A will be tearing down the existing structure and rebuilding—but couldn’t guarantee that.

The Chick-fil-A will open once all of the road improvements are completed.

“After the grading permit is approved it is up to Chick-fil-A and the construction company they hire as to when it will open,” Reynolds said.

Do you think widening Leelyn Drive will help with the traffic Chick-fil-A will bring? Tell us in the comments.

Definitely widen Leelyn Drive and take out the rise before Starbucks to give a better view of on coming traffice when pulling out - it will not only help Chic Filet, but the other business that have access to that part of Leelyn Drive.

Not sure why the county is lumping the responsibility of road maintenance and improvement on the shoulders of a business that wants to bring jobs and tax revenue to the Severna Park community. Maybe the county would prefer to have an abandoned building/property in the heart of the SP business district.

I agree with you. Why make it more difficult and un-attractive to businesses, not to mention more expensive. It really discourages those who would love to start a business.

I have heard rumors that they might make that one section of Leelyn "One-Way", I certainly hope that is not the county's plan.
