Family Violence Trial Rescheduled for March 14

The criminal trial for the 22-year-old Millersville man accused of stabbing his mother is scheduled for March 14.

The trial for James Arthur Zito, a 22-year-old Millersville man who allegedly stabbed his mother in July 2012 and then fled the home, has been rescheduled for March 14.

Zito's criminal trial in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court in Annapolis was originally scheduled to take place on Jan. 22. It was postponed when the defense attorney filed a motion indicating Zito had mental health issues.

"The case postponed because the defense attorney filed a NCR," state attorney's office spokeswoman Kristin Fleckenstein told Patch in January. "That is basically a motion that the defense attorney files where he is trying to say to the court, 'My client has mental health issues and is not criminally responsible for this case.'"

Zito faces charges of first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, false imprisonment, arson threat and having a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure.

I appreciate Patch's updates on local community news, however, this incident has become one of a personal family matter. Although this sort of information is public record, updates on this story arent necessary and can only serve to cause this family additional stress. Severna Park is a supportive community and I hope everyone who reads this will take a moment to pray for this family, whom so many of us have become fond of over our many years together in Severna Park. Thanks.
