County Reopens Cooling Centers

Anne Arundel County issued a code red heat alert on Tuesday, as temperatures nudged into the 100s.

 

With heat indexes topping 100 degrees this week, Anne Arundel County officials issued an excessive heat warning and reopened cooling centers across the county.

Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible, take cool baths and to drink plenty of fluids. 

The following cooling centers will be open from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Thursday, according to the press release.

North County

  • Brooklyn Park Senior Center, 202 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park—8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays only
  • Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie—8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays only
  • Anne Arundel County Police Northern District Community Meeting Room, 939 Hammonds Lane, Glen Burnie—7 a.m. to 7 a.m. (24 hours)

West County

  • O’Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton—8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday only
  • Anne Arundel County Police Western District Community Meeting Room, 8273 Telegraph Road, Odenton—7 a.m to 7 a.m. (24 hours) Friday through Monday

East County

  • Pasadena Senior Center, 4103 Mountain Road, Pasadena—8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays only
  • Anne Arundel County Police Eastern District Community Meeting Room, 3700 Mountain Road, Pasadena—7 a.m. to 7 a.m. (24 hours)
  • Arnold Senior Center, 44 Church Road—8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

South County

  • Annapolis Senior Center, 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis—8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays only
  • South County Senior Center, 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater—8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays only
  • Anne Arundel County Police Southern District Community Meeting Room, 35 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater—7 a.m. to 7 a.m. (24 hours)

Frank, could you elaborate a little bit about what these cooling centers offer? Can one bring pets? Are refreshments offered, or permitted to be brought in? Are there sleeping cots, or can/should one bring an air mattress or cot? Is electricity (for recharging cellphones and computers) available? Can one access wireless? Is anything specifically prohibited? I think that information would be helpful, in case we need to avail ourselves of the facilities.
