Score a perfect 10 for gift giving with Surprise Balls that continuously unravel revealing little trinkets nestled among the paper for $18. Kassy Sodergreen, owner of the Paper in the Park shop, said these balls are the hot item in the store this year and are sure to keep a child busy on a long drive.
Also worth noting is the unique line of Lilly Pulitzer items to include an iPhone case for $25, note cube for $17 and a drink "koozie" for $7—all with a nautical theme. They have Kate Spade, too.
For those on your list who like the good old days, see the vintage stickers for $14 and cards for $15. Of special note, Paper in the Park won the 2011 Brides Choice Award from WeddingWire, putting the shop in the top 5 percent of wedding pros nationwide.
Here's a recap of the unique gifts we've discovered to date:
The second find was piano music, performed by local musician and long-time Severna Park resident Jeff Harding whose two holiday recordings titled I'm Home for Christmas and the latest release A Christmas Song, can be found at Side Street Framers in Park Plaza, B.J.'s Blings & Things consignment shop, Cafe Bretton and Gary's Gardens. A Christmas Song is also available at Pat's Hallmark in Park Plaza.
The third find was a perfect blend of good taste and good humor. The "Ugly Sweater" is among the cleverly named coffees of "Ho Ho" in Naughty and Nice, and a "Christmas Perk" Bag of Coal is available in 12-ounce festive bags for $11.95 at the Big Bean coffee shop.
Taking us up to six unique gifts are these three finds that will keep you chirping through the holidays.
The first is a snowman bird feeder ($24.99) coupled with a 5-pound bag of sunflower seeds ($7.99).
"It's a great gift for kids of all ages," said Michael Moore, owner of the Wild Bird Center in Park Plaza.
If a bird watcher is on your list, the gift ideas are flying out of the store. If squirrels are a nuisance to the birds in your paradise, take a look at the line of Squirrel Busters bird feeders, guaranteed to keep them on the ground and not in the feeder. The prices range from $26.99 to $89.99.
Best of all, Moore backs the company's guarantee and will fix any feeder if you have problems.
Finally, a perfect gift for a favorite teacher, beautician or anyone who likes to feed the birds, a Christmas tree bird feeder for $19.99 will have them singing. Visit the store with your children who will receive a complimentary Audubon bird identification chart. No purchase necessary.
The seventh and eighth unique gifts were found by Severna Park Patch Calendar Editor Tammy Turner who spotted two handmade accessories at the Paper Trousseau on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard.
A decorated hand-felted wool cell phone holder is $15 and pretty hand-felted wool flower pins (that also have a clip on the back) cost $35. These are handcrafted locally by jillybean designs.
The ninth gift in our unique gifts series is a delight for those who are looking for a designer fashion find at a fraction of the price. Savvy consignment shop owner Stacey Cassidy alerted Patch to designer Hobo wallets, brand new, (found at Nordstrom for $118 and up) at the consignment shop in the Severna Park Village shopping center for $59. Wow!
