SPMS and Oak Hill Elementary Schools Named Green Schools

Severna Park Middle School and Oak Hill Elementary School are among the 11 county public schools recently named Maryland Green Schools by the
Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE), according to a press release. Severna Park Elementary School was recertified along with Bodkin and Davidsonville Elementary schools

The other county schools to achieve Maryland Green School status are: Eastport, Four Seasons, Jacobsville, and Sunset elementary schools; Bates, George Fox, Central and Ruth Parker Eason special schools, and the Center of Applied Technology – North.

According to the Board of Education news announcement, Anne Arundel County Public Schools now has 43 schools and centers – more than 35 percent – that are certified by the MAEOE. Statewide, 16 percent of all Maryland schools have earned the state’s highest recognition of environmental literacy.
It takes about two years for a school to earn green status. Through establishing an effective, proactive environmental program that includes getting the entire community involved in becoming more environmentally conscious, schools must integrate “green” thinking into every aspect of their culture from staff professional development to community celebrations.
Established 13 years ago, the Maryland Green School Program celebrates Maryland’s model environmental education efforts. Some of this year’s Green School projects included raising and releasing American Eels or Diamondback Terrapins, propagating and planting Bay grasses; installing and maintaining Monarch butterfly gardens; and establishing schoolyard habitats with native plants.
