The county executive's office is warning residents of a possible scam targeting seniors with fraudulent inspections posing as Fire Department representatives, according to a news announcement from John R. Leopold's office on Wednesday.

“If you receive a letter in the mail advising you of a home
inspection by the Fire Department, please contact the police and be aware that the letter is a fake,” said Leopold. We are concerned that these letters are being sent with criminal intent to rob or harm residents.”

The news announcement said that an Annapolis resident of Heritage Harbor recently received a letter indicating that representatives from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department would be out within the month to conduct a fire inspection of their home as part of the department’s In-service Fire Inspection
program.

The Fire Department does utilize a similar letter for its In-service Fire Inspection Program, but these letters are hand delivered by firefighters from the local fire station to the businesses that are scheduled to be inspected that month.

“I want to emphasize that the Anne Arundel County Fire Department does not perform Fire Code Inspections in private homes and anyone who has received a letter in the mail or from any individual indicating that Fire Department personnel will be conducting a fire inspection in their
home should immediately contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department” said Fire Chief John Robert Ray, in a press release.
