Paintings, Calligraphy Exhibit at Woods Church

"God’s Blessings" is a collection of oil paintings by Jane Ferguson, Joo-Hee Park and calligraphy by Jan Lynn, now on display in the gallery of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church,

The exhibit runs through June 10 and includes Plein Air landscapes and still lifes as well as calligraphic quotes from a variety of sources. It is part of a series of exhibits commemorating Woods’ Centennial. All of the artists are members of Woods church.

Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and  Fridays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Weekends are by appointment only. Call Nancy Saarlas at 410-647-0135 for information.

Ferguson, who says she is “always trying to paint the invisible,” which includes the joy she feels when painting and the memorable moments in time that we carry in our hearts, began painting in 2000.

Now an active local artist, she gives painting workshops and has produced several lines of greeting cards that feature her pen and ink drawings of Chesapeake Bay area. You can see more of her work at www.janefergusonart.com

Joo Hee Park began studying painting with Ferguson in 2010. A professional singer who has performed in Korea and the United States, she holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in voice. She “fell in love with oil painting right from the first brush stroke,” and especially enjoys portraiture.

Lynn has demonstrated her versatility in a wide variety of media for over 65 years. She studied at Pratt Institute and received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, and for many years was a potter.

More recently she has focused on calligraphy. Visitors to Woods’ sanctuary will see her work on the steps and aisle where she inscribed significant Biblical names and early church fathers. She was a potter for many years and still considers that her vocation.

Woods Church offers a program of art displays in its gallery as an affirmation of the relationship between the arts and religion. Work by groups of artists or individuals are exhibited throughout the year, and do not necessarily have religious content.
